- maybe hit Napa & see what hamerican wines are all about
- drive down the west coast of California w/ no particular plans (Santa Cruise, Monterey)
* hit Los Angeles - hang at Long Beach / Malibu ... maybe Disney park
* San Diego is the most south point of the trip
- then head North to Grand Canyon
* and finally stay 2 nites in Las Vegas - the sin city

nyc midtown explosion

my first look at the explosion

another look at 41st and lexington

|
as i left work yesterday and walked about a block away from chanin building i heard a big explosion. when i turned around i saw huge dust cloud being blown about 200 feet into the air. you could also hear this deep, scary hiss. most shocking was the force with which the dust was being pushed into the air.
it seemed like 9/11 all over again, i've seen 100s of people running for their lifes away from 42nd street. some woman was hysterically screaming while her mother was trying to pull her away. i saw an older white women fall on top of a heavier black woman as they were running away.
my first though was "it's nothing", "it can't be a bomb", but seeing everyone running with such fear in their eyes made me immediately fear "maybe a subway train has been blown up ... maybe there's another explosion on the way". then it hit me - i needed to get away.
memories of 9/11 came back again, seeing abandoned shoes on the street by people fleeing the scene. then seeing 100s of people walking in the middle of streets along with cars ... away from 42nd street.
it wasn't 'till an hour later when TV announced that is was NOT a terrorist attack, but a "simple" manhole explosion ... wow - N.Y.f**ing C ....
found 2 videos that show: deep scary hiss of the pipe explosion in ny (up close) and another hiss sound of the pipe for a block away
panic and people running away from manhole explosion in ny (cursing / explicit)

another "bites the dust" - Luke & Terry's wedding
|
|
there must have been something in the water that year when me, Luke & Marcelo met, because not even a year later ... we're all married!
Well, Luke's wedding was a blast ... as one can expect from any Polish wedding (wink, wing . Some funny tradditions including the "duck dance" & cowboy hats ... but going to church, then divest of dive bars (before the reception) & being photographed by David with passion ... was priceless.

ohh boy ... when your job is stressing you much (& your wife is out of town) ... you can always count on your friends ... to get you drunk!
(boy did we get trashed that night ... some things i my friends had to remind me about the next morning: david accidentally hitting my head against the wall ... "who was this black dude you were talking to" ???? - ooooohh - then i looked at the pix & remembered talking to some shady "dj" dude, that seems to liked jeannie quite a bit .... ohh & i _did_ remember being woken up by the cabbie "heloo, SIR, we are here!")

KILLY: march snow storm chasers

so my plain to chicago gets cancelled ... what to do but ... convince David to take a trip up to Killington ... in the middle of the biggest march snow storm in history.
here's David's story:
I must admit, Sunday at Pico was probably the most epic day of skiing I have ever had on the east coast. It was pure bliss.....open fields and glades full of untracked powder up to your knees at times. Maciek, Ryan and I shredded the slopes of Pico in non-stop top to bottom runs. We were joined for the last run by Jason. It was sweet. It snowed pretty much non-stop from Friday through Sunday afternoon.
Good call going to Pico for the day Ryan!
Other memorable moments this weekend:
* Driving through the worst blizzard I have ever been through on Friday night. Whiteout conditions, limited visibility, snow drifts on the highway, 45 MPH max, 8 hour journey to Killi. Maciek: "Don't worry, I grew up in Poland driving through snow like this. No problem."
i have to step in here ... thx ODB, but one sentence on the 8 HOURS drive up is definitely not enough:
- "Subaru's intelligent all-wheel-drive is ... a too intelligent sometimes"
- back seat driving each other was hilarious (1st me to David & then David back to me): "dude, slow down" "don't touch breaks" "stay under 40" "duuude, the car just went sideways" "stay to the right" "u too close to the edge" me - "what's that noise?"/ david "that's the highway, u driving off the road!" / me - "nooo, that must be ur car ... " - yes, although i did grow up on this white stuff, i haven't been this tensed for 5 hours in a long time ...
- we have seen about 15 cars in the ditch (including an audi ....) - idiots
- it sucked to get stuck behind the snow plow truck for about 1/2 hour
- the trucks running us of the road while passing us at 60 .... scary stuff
- dave's mangina was insisting on the motel when we hit the 5 hour mark ... & we were only in albany ... thankfully, he felt asleep & didn't wake up 'till exit 20 - "let's give those back roads a try" worked
- ohh & there was a very "twilight moment" on the open stretch of route 4, where the wind blew snow across the road - at one point of time .... there was no road!
now ... after all this effort, the snow actually sucked a** on sat .... heavy, wet & very challenging ... so challenging I decided to report an "injury" after riding for 2 hours, so that i could get a voucher for another day (after paying full price of course). but then nature did reward our sacrifice with "the most amazing day on the snow in the past 2 seasons"
(david cont.)
* "No, its not an excuse. My mangina is feeling a little inflamed right now"
* Ryan: "My new girlfriend is refreshingly non-psychotic" as if describing a new flavor of soda.
* ODB and YCB (young crusty bastard) - Maciek with no hat, 2-3 inches of snow on the top of his head and icicles on his goatee, looking like crusty the snowman.
* the smallest turnout ever in my three years as a sno-ho. I think we had a total of 7 people in the house plus two dogs, all dudes. Props to Jason for bringing his girl on Saturday night. I think maciek's polish sausage made her vomit. Song of the day "I think I'm jealous of your girlfriend' by Alicia Keys.
